C1401

ABS / stability-control fault code, listed for 1 vehicle line from Mercedes-Benz. What it means on each one, with sources, and when the module is the cause.

What C1401 means

Is it the ABS module?

Check the cheap things first: battery voltage and the main fuses for the ABS pump and module, the ground straps, the module connector (corrosion, a pushed-back pin) and, for wheel-speed codes, the sensor and its wiring at each wheel. If those are good and the code returns as soon as it is cleared — or the scan tool cannot talk to the ABS module at all — the module itself is the likely cause, and that is what we repair.

What does C1401 mean on a Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W163) ML320 / ML350 / ML430 / ML500 / ML55 AMG?

The source we cite for the 1998-2005 Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W163) ML320 / ML350 / ML430 / ML500 / ML55 AMG lists it as: A rebuilder: 'You may have a C1401 code regardless of which rebuild tier your module requires' (meaning not given on the page). That vehicle uses Continental Teves (ATE) ATE module with separate solenoid pack and pump motor. Repair starts at $499.
