What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

High water: rule out a wet connector

Driving through standing water can push water into connectors and, on some vehicles, toward the ABS unit itself. If the light came on after a flooded drive, unplug the module connector and look for water or fresh corrosion first. Tell us about the water when you order, so the bench knows what to look for.

Heat: when the light comes and goes

An ABS module warms up and cools down on every drive, and long hot seasons add to that. Over years of heat cycling, solder joints inside the module can crack — the classic sign is a code that comes and goes, or a module that drops off the network once it is hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.

Maryland rules that matter for an ABS light

In Maryland, an ABS light alone does not fail the safety inspection — but it still means ABS is off.

Safety inspection

Maryland has no yearly safety inspection, but a used vehicle must pass a safety inspection at a licensed station before it can be sold, bought or registered in the state. The check covers brakes, tires, lights, steering, suspension and other components. source ↗

The ABS warning light

A State Police bulletin (ASED-019) says airbag, ABS and engine warning lights are not regulated by Maryland and are not rejectable items in the safety inspection. The mechanic must note a lit warning light on the Vehicle Inspection Report so the owner knows the system may not be working. source ↗
