What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

Heat: when the light comes and goes

An ABS module warms up and cools down on every drive, and long hot seasons add to that. Over years of heat cycling, solder joints inside the module can crack — the classic sign is a code that comes and goes, or a module that drops off the network once it is hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.

Missouri rules that matter for an ABS light

In Missouri, an ABS light alone does not fail the safety inspection — but it still means ABS is off.

Safety inspection

Missouri requires a safety inspection every two years (even model years in even years, odd in odd years), done within 60 days before registration or a title transfer at an official station. Vehicles are exempt for the ten years after their model year as long as they have fewer than 150,000 miles; rebuilt salvage vehicles are not exempt. source ↗

The ABS warning light

The Highway Patrol's inspection manual rejects a vehicle if the brake warning light comes on when the brake pedal is pressed, but tells inspectors in the same rule not to inspect the anti-lock braking system warning device or light. source ↗
