Driving conditions in Jersey City
From climate records and local road agencies — each linked to its source.
- Jersey City has no NOAA climate-normals station of its own; at the Newark airport station, snowfall averages about 32 inches a year and the low reaches 32°F or colder on about 80 days a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). source ↗
- New Jersey's Office of the State Climatologist places the area from New York Harbor and the Lower Hudson southwest to Trenton in its Central Zone, whose northern edge is often the boundary between freezing and non-freezing precipitation in winter. source ↗
- The state climatologist notes that pavement and buildings in the Central Zone's developed areas keep nighttime temperatures warmer than nearby suburbs, a heat-island effect. source ↗
- Jersey City's Department of Public Works runs 85 salt spreaders and plow trucks for roughly 200 miles of city-owned streets and says its salt domes are stocked with upwards of 6,500 tons of salt. source ↗
- Before the January 25, 2026 storm, Jersey City's primary salt vendor delivered only 650 of 4,900 contracted tons; the city replaced the vendor and filled its salt storage before the February storm. source ↗
What that means for your ABS module
Road salt: check the wiring before the module
Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.
Heat: when the light comes and goes
An ABS module warms up and cools down on every drive, and long hot seasons add to that. Over years of heat cycling, solder joints inside the module can crack — the classic sign is a code that comes and goes, or a module that drops off the network once it is hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.
New Jersey rules that matter for an ABS light
New Jersey has no periodic safety inspection for most passenger cars — the ABS light is still a warning to act on.
Safety inspection
Ordinary passenger cars in New Jersey get an emissions-only inspection every two years; the annual mechanical (safety) and emissions inspection is listed for passenger-transport plates (taxis, limousines, buses and similar) and commercial-plated vehicles. source ↗
