What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

High water: rule out a wet connector

Driving through standing water can push water into connectors and, on some vehicles, toward the ABS unit itself. If the light came on after a flooded drive, unplug the module connector and look for water or fresh corrosion first. Tell us about the water when you order, so the bench knows what to look for.

New York rules that matter for an ABS light

In New York, an ABS light alone does not fail the safety inspection — but it still means ABS is off.

Safety inspection

Every vehicle registered in New York must be inspected at least every 12 months. source ↗

The ABS warning light

New York's inspection regulation says an inoperative anti-lock brake system or a lit ABS warning light is not a reason to reject the car. Inspectors still reject for any disconnected, broken, seized, bypassed or missing brake component. source ↗
