Driving conditions in Seattle

From climate records and local road agencies — each linked to its source.

  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport averages about 156 days a year with measurable precipitation (0.01 inch or more) (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).
  • Sea-Tac gets about 39.3 inches of precipitation in a normal year, about 15.3 inches of it from December through February (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).
  • Sea-Tac averages about 25 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).
  • Sea-Tac averages about 23 days a year with at least half an inch of precipitation (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).
  • September through November averages about 11.8 inches of precipitation at Sea-Tac (NOAA 1991–2020 normals).
  • When winter weather is forecast, Seattle’s transportation department pre-treats priority streets with a brine of rock salt and magnesium chloride, then spreads salt on snow and ice that has already built up.
  • SDOT’s goal for its Gold snow routes, streets used by hospitals, buses, large trucks and major employers, is bare and wet pavement in all travel lanes within 12 hours of a significant lull in a storm; for Emerald routes it is one lane each way.
  • Seattle Public Utilities’ South Park pump station sends stormwater into the Duwamish Waterway during high tides, when the storm drains there cannot drain by gravity, to reduce flooding on roads with formal stormwater collection.

What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

High water: rule out a wet connector

Driving through standing water can push water into connectors and, on some vehicles, toward the ABS unit itself. If the light came on after a flooded drive, unplug the module connector and look for water or fresh corrosion first. Tell us about the water when you order, so the bench knows what to look for.

Washington rules that matter for an ABS light

Washington has no periodic safety inspection for most passenger cars — the ABS light is still a warning to act on.

Safety inspection

Washington does not appear on the U.S. GAO's list of states that have required periodic vehicle safety inspections (1929-2015), and no newer program was found.
