What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

Heat: when the light comes and goes

An ABS module warms up and cools down on every drive, and long hot seasons add to that. Over years of heat cycling, solder joints inside the module can crack — the classic sign is a code that comes and goes, or a module that drops off the network once it is hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.

West Virginia rules that matter for an ABS light

In West Virginia, an ABS light alone does not fail the safety inspection — but it still means ABS is off.

Safety inspection

State law requires every registered motor vehicle to be inspected once every two years; commercial motor vehicles under federal rules are inspected yearly. source ↗

The ABS warning light

The State Police inspection manual says the ABS indicator must be present if the car came with one, but if it stays on during the inspection the car is not rejected, because ABS is designed to fall back to normal braking. The car is rejected if the brake system failure light stays on after the engine starts and the parking brake is released. source ↗
