  • The Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans says a rainstorm that drops more than an inch of water in an hour will most likely outpace the drainage system, and streets flood until it catches up.
  • The Sewerage & Water Board runs 12 small underpass pump stations across New Orleans that switch on by themselves when the water rises.
  • During major street flooding, the City of New Orleans may lift parking restrictions on neutral grounds and sidewalks so residents can move vehicles to higher ground, and the restrictions return two hours after flooding ends unless otherwise announced.
  • The Sewerage & Water Board says street runoff enters its drainage system through more than 68,000 catch basins, and the system includes about 1,500 miles of underground drainage pipes and 120 pumps in 24 drainage pump stations.
  • The City of New Orleans’ flood hazard profile says most of the city is below sea level or ringed by levees, so rainwater cannot flow out and must be pumped, and that its lowest areas are Lakeview, Gentilly and New Orleans East.

What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

High water: rule out a wet connector

Driving through standing water can push water into connectors and, on some vehicles, toward the ABS unit itself. If the light came on after a flooded drive, unplug the module connector and look for water or fresh corrosion first. Tell us about the water when you order, so the bench knows what to look for.

Heat: when the light comes and goes

An ABS module warms up and cools down on every drive, and long hot seasons add to that. Over years of heat cycling, solder joints inside the module can crack — the classic sign is a code that comes and goes, or a module that drops off the network once it is hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.

Louisiana rules that matter for an ABS light

Louisiana inspection rules, and what they say about ABS.

Safety inspection

Louisiana requires a periodic inspection of every registered motor vehicle, at least once every other year, covering its mechanism, brakes and equipment, with the inspection certificate (sticker) shown on the windshield. Inspections are done at licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection stations regulated by the State Police.

The ABS warning light

Louisiana's inspection rules (LAC 55:III.813) test brakes with a stopping-distance road test: a vehicle under 10,000 lb GVWR must stop within 30 feet on a level test strip without pulling to one side. The rules do not mention the ABS warning lamp or other dash warning lights.
