Louisiana inspection rules, and what they say about ABS.
Louisiana inspection rules and the ABS light
Safety inspection
Louisiana requires a periodic inspection of every registered motor vehicle, at least once every other year, covering its mechanism, brakes and equipment, with the inspection certificate (sticker) shown on the windshield. Inspections are done at licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection stations regulated by the State Police. source ↗
The ABS warning light
Louisiana's inspection rules (LAC 55:III.813) test brakes with a stopping-distance road test: a vehicle under 10,000 lb GVWR must stop within 30 feet on a level test strip without pulling to one side. The rules do not mention the ABS warning lamp or other dash warning lights. source ↗
Emissions testing
Emissions testing applies only to gasoline vehicles of 10,000 lb GVWR or less registered in the five Baton Rouge-area parishes (Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston and West Baton Rouge). It is done as part of the annual safety inspection, with OBD II testing since July 2002. source ↗
- An inspection station may only issue the certificate after finding the vehicle's required equipment in good condition and proper adjustment; owners can choose a one-year or two-year certificate (outside the special inspection programs). source ↗
Heat and humidity in Louisiana
When wintry weather is forecast, DOTD pretreats roads, bridges and overpasses with salt and salt brine (January 2025 example). source ↗
Under-hood electronics in Louisiana live with heat and humidity. The ABS module sits next to the brake lines and warms up and cools down on every drive, and over the years that cycling can crack solder joints inside it. It shows up as codes that come and go, or a module that drops off the network when hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.
Road salt: check the wiring before the module
Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

- 2Your module back — with the repair price refunded, minus shipping costs.
