North Carolina inspection rules and the ABS light
Safety inspection
A vehicle registered in North Carolina must pass an annual safety inspection before the registration can be renewed. Foot brake and parking brake are on the checklist. Vehicles more than 30 years old are exempt. source ↗
The ABS warning light
North Carolina's brake inspection rule lists foot brake checks (even braking on all wheels, worn linings, pedal reserve, fluid level, leaks, removed or disconnected parts) but does not mention the ABS warning lamp at all. source ↗
Emissions testing
Cars and light trucks registered in 19 counties get an emissions check as part of the annual safety inspection; 1996 and newer vehicles are checked through the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system. State laws passed in 2023 and July 2026 will end the program in all 19 counties, but only after the U.S. EPA approves the change; EPA proposed approval on May 8, 2026. The annual safety inspection stays in every county. source ↗
- By state law, the safety inspection covers brakes as required by G.S. 20-124, along with lights, horn, steering, wipers, directional signals and tires. source ↗
Heat and humidity in North Carolina
NCDOT may pretreat roads with brine (water with 23 percent salt) 24 to 48 hours before a storm, and spreads salt and sand after plowing. source ↗
Under-hood electronics in North Carolina live with heat and humidity. The ABS module sits next to the brake lines and warms up and cools down on every drive, and over the years that cycling can crack solder joints inside it. It shows up as codes that come and go, or a module that drops off the network when hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.
Road salt: check the wiring before the module
Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

If the bench finds your module past repair, we stop and tell you before doing anything else. Then you choose:
- 1A replacement — a refurbished unit of the same family with your VIN, coding and configuration cloned onto it, from $950. You pay only the difference from what you already paid, and we confirm the amount with you first.
- 2Your module back — with the repair price refunded, minus shipping costs.
Either way, nothing that changes your price happens without your OK.
