Massachusetts inspection rules, and what they say about ABS.

Massachusetts inspection rules and the ABS light

Safety inspection

Every vehicle registered in Massachusetts must pass a yearly inspection under the Massachusetts Vehicle Check program, at one of about 1,800 licensed stations. A newly purchased vehicle must be inspected within 7 days of registration. source ↗

The ABS warning light

The RMV inspection regulation (540 CMR 4.00) does not mention the ABS warning lamp for cars. It does reject a car if the brake failure warning light comes on during the brake pedal test, if it cannot stop from 20 mph within 30 feet, or (for vehicles ten or fewer model years old) if the airbag warning lamp shows a fault. source ↗

Emissions testing

Emissions testing is statewide and yearly: vehicles with onboard diagnostic (OBD) systems that are less than 15 years old must pass an annual emissions test as part of the inspection. source ↗

Winter roads in Massachusetts: check the wiring first

MassDOT pretreats roads with liquid brine or magnesium chloride before storms, then uses rock salt, sand and a salt/calcium chloride pre-mix; it notes that rock salt is corrosive. source ↗

Roads in Massachusetts get salt or brine in winter, and that is hard on ABS wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors and harness damage along the frame can set the same lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at the sensor plugs and the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or the scan tool cannot talk to it at all — mail it in.

Our promise

Can’t be repaired? You don’t pay for a repair.

If the bench finds your module past repair, we stop and tell you before doing anything else. Then you choose:

  1. 1A replacement — a refurbished unit of the same family with your VIN, coding and configuration cloned onto it, from $950. You pay only the difference from what you already paid, and we confirm the amount with you first.
  2. 2Your module back — with the repair price refunded, minus shipping costs.

Either way, nothing that changes your price happens without your OK.

My ABS light came on after winter. Is it the module?

Not always. Salt and slush corrode wheel-speed sensor connectors and wiring, and that sets ABS codes too. Clean, dry connectors and codes that point at the module (or no communication with it) mean the module is the likely cause.
