New Hampshire at a glance
In New Hampshire, an ABS warning light can fail a safety inspection.
New Hampshire inspection rules and the ABS light
Safety inspection
A 2025 state law ended New Hampshire's annual inspection for most passenger vehicles as of January 31, 2026. After a federal court order and a contract dispute, the state suspended the program on February 13, 2026: stations may not issue stickers and annual inspections are not required for now. On April 30, 2026 a federal appeals court paused the order to restart the program. The state says the status could still change, and drivers must still keep their cars safe under RSA Chapter 266. source ↗
The ABS warning light
Under the inspection rules still on the books (Saf-C 3212.02), a car with ABS is rejected if the ABS warning light does not come on with the ignition, does not go out after the engine starts, or comes on when the brake pedal is pressed. This only matters if the inspection program is restarted. source ↗
Emissions testing
The emissions check was part of the annual inspection: the mechanic read the car's on-board diagnostic system. It is suspended together with the safety inspection. source ↗

Winter roads in New Hampshire: check the wiring first
NHDOT uses salt (sodium chloride), sand and calcium chloride on state roads; salt is its main anti-icer. source ↗
Roads in New Hampshire get salt or brine in winter, and that is hard on ABS wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors and harness damage along the frame can set the same lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at the sensor plugs and the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or the scan tool cannot talk to it at all — mail it in.

My ABS light came on after winter. Is it the module?
Not always. Salt and slush corrode wheel-speed sensor connectors and wiring, and that sets ABS codes too. Clean, dry connectors and codes that point at the module (or no communication with it) mean the module is the likely cause.
