  • Reno sprays salt brine (a 23.3 percent sodium chloride solution) on priority streets, bridges and inclines before storms, and spreads a salt-and-sand mix after plowing when ice is present.
  • Reno’s street system of about 2,361 lane miles is split into twenty snow and ice routes, and the city says most plowing happens on higher-elevation routes and outlying areas, which get the most snow.
  • NOAA’s Storm Data for the January 1997 Truckee River flood records U.S. 395 in Washoe Valley under water for two days, cutting the main link between Reno and Carson City, and part of westbound I-80 in Sparks closed for several days.

What that means for your ABS module

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

High water: rule out a wet connector

Driving through standing water can push water into connectors and, on some vehicles, toward the ABS unit itself. If the light came on after a flooded drive, unplug the module connector and look for water or fresh corrosion first. Tell us about the water when you order, so the bench knows what to look for.

Heat: when the light comes and goes

An ABS module warms up and cools down on every drive, and long hot seasons add to that. Over years of heat cycling, solder joints inside the module can crack — the classic sign is a code that comes and goes, or a module that drops off the network once it is hot. That is board-level work — the kind we do on the bench.

Nevada rules that matter for an ABS light

Nevada has no periodic safety inspection for most passenger cars — the ABS light is still a warning to act on.

Safety inspection

Nevada does not appear on the U.S. GAO's list of states that have required periodic vehicle safety inspections (1929-2015), and no newer program was found.
