ABS module repair for California drivers

ABS, traction or stability light on? Mail the module in from Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose or anywhere in California with the prepaid label we email you. It comes back repaired and still coded to your VIN — or, if it is past repair, as a refurbished unit with your data cloned on.

California at a glance

California has no periodic safety inspection for most passenger cars — the ABS light is still a warning to act on.

California inspection rules and the ABS light

Safety inspection

California has no periodic safety inspection for ordinary passenger cars. A BAR vehicle safety systems inspection is required only to register revived salvage vehicles and a few other special cases (revived junk, specially constructed, converted off-highway vehicles).

Emissions testing

A smog inspection is required when you register or renew a vehicle in California, with exceptions: gasoline cars less than eight model-years old, 1975 and older gasoline models, and electric vehicles.

Heat cycling in California

Caltrans' snow and ice manual lists salt (sodium chloride) among its deicers and tells crews to use the minimum needed because salt harms vegetation and water quality and corrodes metal.

In California the ABS module goes through wide temperature swings — a cool morning, a hot afternoon, a hot engine bay. Repeated heat cycling is one of the things that wears out solder joints inside the module, and the fault often starts as an intermittent code before it stays on. Board-level faults like that are what we work on at the bench.

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.

Our promise

Can’t be repaired? You don’t pay for a repair.

If the bench finds your module past repair, we stop and tell you before doing anything else. Then you choose:

  1. 1A replacement — a refurbished unit of the same family with your VIN, coding and configuration cloned onto it, from $950. You pay only the difference from what you already paid, and we confirm the amount with you first.
  2. 2Your module back — with the repair price refunded, minus shipping costs.

Either way, nothing that changes your price happens without your OK.
