ABS module repair for New Mexico drivers

ABS, traction or stability light on? Mail the module in from Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Rio Rancho or anywhere in New Mexico with the prepaid label we email you. It comes back repaired and still coded to your VIN — or, if it is past repair, as a refurbished unit with your data cloned on.

New Mexico at a glance

New Mexico has no periodic safety inspection for most passenger cars — the ABS light is still a warning to act on.

New Mexico inspection rules and the ABS light

Safety inspection

New Mexico ran a periodic vehicle safety inspection program from 1953 and repealed it in 1977, according to the U.S. GAO.

Emissions testing

Albuquerque-Bernalillo County requires emissions tests. Vehicles up to 35 years old (1992 and newer) and under 10,001 lb must pass a test to register, and a test is also required at change of ownership. A pass is good for one or two years depending on the vehicle.

Heat cycling in New Mexico

NMDOT crews plow and drop salt and cinders on roads during winter storms.

In New Mexico the ABS module goes through wide temperature swings — a cool morning, a hot afternoon, a hot engine bay. Repeated heat cycling is one of the things that wears out solder joints inside the module, and the fault often starts as an intermittent code before it stays on. Board-level faults like that are what we work on at the bench.

Road salt: check the wiring before the module

Salt and brine work their way into the ABS system's wiring. Corroded wheel-speed sensor connectors, or a harness chafed along the frame, can set the same warning lights as a failed module. Before you pull the module, look at each sensor plug and at the module connector for green corrosion or broken pins. If they are clean and the codes point at the module itself — or a scan tool cannot talk to it — the module is the likely cause.
